Ala Moana Elevated Pedestrian Walkway
Honolulu, Oahu
.

.
The Ala Moana Elevated Pedestrian Walkway is a thoughtfully designed bridge in Honolulu that offers a safer and more scenic way to cross the busy Ala Moana Boulevard, which carries a high volume of traffic. Spanning six lanes, this $17.8 million elevated walkway connects the vibrant Kaka‘ako district and the Ward Village neighborhood directly to the beloved Ala Moana Beach Park and Kewalo Basin, creating an easy link between urban city life and the waterfront.
More than just a functional crossing, the walkway is integrated into the newly developed Victoria Ward Park and provides a pleasant walking experience with winding paths, tropical landscaping, and artistic design elements. This space offers not only improved pedestrian safety but also an inviting environment that enhances the overall urban pedestrian experience. It supports the community vision of a walkable, connected neighborhood that encourages residents and visitors to embrace outdoor living and recreation.
The project was a collaborative effort supported by federal and local funding, with significant contributions from local developers to ensure both environmental and aesthetic goals were met. It serves as an example of modern infrastructure blending connectivity, safety, and public space benefits without expanding the city's footprint. This elevated walkway is expected to be used by thousands daily, significantly reducing pedestrian and vehicle conflicts on one of Honolulu’s busiest roads while offering a welcoming passage from the city to the beach.
